Our Jean R. Beers annual scholarship program was implemented in 1984.  Ms. Beers, a SWE Connecticut Section member, had the vision and raised the scholarship funds with personal resources and a dedication to fundraising for this cause.  She is the Section’s inspiration for this program which provides encouragement and financial assistance to support collegiate women in their pursuit of an education in engineering and related technical and scientific disciplines. In the same spirit today our scholarship program provides direct and meaningful assistance to women college students in need of financial assistance.

Our scholarship program is very important in pursuing our goal of reaching parity at the workplace; female enrollment in engineering colleges is still only about 20%, contrasted to 50% in medicine and law.  Currently our Section grants multiple scholarship awards with the generous sponsorship of Connecticut corporations furthering our efforts to support these deserving students to become part of the next generation of engineers and scientists.

SWE Connecticut Section invites qualified women undergraduate students to submit an application for our Jean R. Beers Scholarship Award of $1000.  The number of scholarships offered during FY14 will depend upon the amount of donations received and the number of qualified applicants who apply.  The FY14 scholarship award is made for the fall semester of 2014. The Scholarship recipient will need to submit proof of her acceptance to enroll in the degree program specified for the fall semester of 2014 prior to receiving the monetary award.

Applicants are judged on the basis of academic preparation, academic ability, activities, work experience, interest in engineering, communication ability, leadership potential, drive and determination.  Attention is also given to individual financial need. Selection criteria are consistent with the mission of the Society of Women Engineers.

Preferred submission method for the application is via email – either filled out digitally as a Microsoft Word file or a scanned copy as a pdf. All application materials (application, essay, and official transcript) must be completed and emailed and/or postmarked no later than February 1, 2014.

The recipient will be notified in March 2014.  She will also be invited to attend a local SWE Connecticut Section Scholarship Award Dinner meeting scheduled for March or April of 2014 where she will be formally presented with the award.

Eligibility for the Jean R. Beers Scholarship is limited to undergraduate female students pursuing baccalaureate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics who will be enrolled full-time in the fall of 2014.  Applicants must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits by June and plan to continue their education for the school year 2014-2015 in order to qualify. In addition, applicants must reside or attend a college/university within the SWE Connecticut Section, which is bounded by the following zip codes:
